Zabar's baby! Oh yeah, oh yeah. NY-deli feast tonight, arrived this a.m., to celebrate round II of John's birthday. Shrimp and lobster salads, H&H bagels, chive cream cheese, pastrami, corned beef, sour-dough rye, chocolate chip cookies. Basically, all of John's favs. And mine too - OMG, can't wait to sink my teeth into a warm pastrami on rye with Russian and a smidge of slaw. YES! I also bought a small jar of whole white truffles, to grate over softly scrambled eggs. Don't think we'll get to that tonight, though. We have to pace ourselves.
Moderation, Stephanie, moderation. Slow. Down. Take a few deep breaths. Savor. Enjoy. And then, stop. Remember?
And anyhow, I don't want to be stuffed and miserable, I've got to be spot-on for Hijinx with my minxes tonight! Woo hoo!
Happy Birthday Marge!
Pastrami paradise over here. Prrrr... We had a nice little second birthday celebration for John, with the kids. I made Kosher for Passover brownies for A, and they're incredible. As good as any brownie. The key is matzo cake meal, very easy to create tasty baked goods when you've got it. (Recipe posted in comments, below.)
So I'm off to Suz's shortly, to tape a new episode of Feminine Hijinx! Woo hoo!

Hi Stephanie, I love your blog. I read it everyday...sometimes twice a day to get updates. Anyhoo, I have always wanted to order from Zabars but have been apprehensive about ordering food long distance. Have you always had great experience with that? If you were going to order what do you think I should start with? What is the yummiest?
Hi Donna! I'm so glad you're still checking in - thank you. And thanks for listening to FH too...
Ordering from Zabar's is a snap - you choose the date you want the items to ship, and if they're perishable (and all the good stuff is, ha), it's Fed Exed overnight for morning delivery. Packed with lots of frozen packs, in an insulated bag and box. Nicely done. The yummiest? I'd say the deli meats, pastrami and corned beef, both are lean and sliced the way they're supposed to be. And the sour-dough rye, it's delicious. I buy two and freeze one. Also, they send H&H bagels which are the best. They're passably fresh the day they arrive, and terrific for toasting after that and from frozen. Add chive cream cheese - it's superior cream cheese, very rich. And if you enjoy smoked fish, paper thin slices of Nova salmon, with your bagels, is a treat that can't be replicated here in MN. That's more than one thing, perhaps starting with corned beef or pastrami and sour-dough rye is the way to go. Bagels/cream cheese/and Nova after that if you're happy with the deliver and quality. Oooh, let me know if you order and if you enjoy it! Stephanie
Kosher for Passover Brownies
12 squares
3 eggs
1 ½ c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
¾ c. (1 ½ sticks) butter (or margarine, for non-dairy), melted
1/3 c. matzo cake meal
¾ c. cocoa
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease an 8x8-inch pan. In a medium bowl, beat eggs with a wooden spoon. Add sugar and vanilla and beat. Add melted butter and beat. Mix in matzo cake meal and cocoa. Pour into pan and bake, in the lower third of the oven, for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a bit of thick, moist batter clinging to it.
